Morgan Ashurst constructed the new EPIC multi-occupancy development in Nuneaton on a former brownfield site. The development was funded by Warwickshire County Council and Advantage West Midlands with grant support from the European Regional Development Fund.
The building is one of the most sustainable and innovative in the West Midlands. It has been designed to be highly energy-efficient and sustainable, with its lighting heating and power systems at the cutting edge of green technology. It has been presented with a number of environmental awards including a Sustainability Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) West Midlands for the environmentally-friendly nature of EPIC’s construction, as well as the various energy efficient mechanisms installed for its future use.
The centre also received an award from BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), which gave the scheme a ‘10’ grading in recognition of its ‘green’ building methods.
Morgan Ashurst utilised a variety of recycled materials during EPIC’s construction, including recycled crushed concrete and oil-rig tubing for board piles. In addition, bricks and blocks used at the site were re-used at other schemes.
With running costs a priority for the building’s end users, a series of innovative mechanisms were installed with the aim of providing energy consumption levels at around 50 per cent below equivalent commercial office space. A ‘TermoDeck’ ventilation and air conditioning system installed in the building also assists in keeping running costs low by satisfying strict air leakage requirements whilst providing natural cooling and heating.
